In de drie jaar die zat tussen Noble Beast (dat alleen in Amerika al meer dan 150.000
keer over de toonbank ging en binnenkwam op #12 in de Billboard Top 200) en zijn
begin maart te verschijnen nieuwe album Break It Yourself is Andrew Bird meerdere
malen de wereld over getrokken, maar vestigde hij zich ook definitief in New York,
werd vader, componeerde de soundtrack voor de film Norman en startte hij met
speakerbouwer Ian Schneller het Sonic Arboretum project waarmee ze speelde in het
befaamde Guggenheim Museum in New York en Chicago's Museum of Contemporary
Art. Zo experimenteel als deze optredens waren, zo traditioneel waren de opnamen
van Break It Yourself. Het album werd genomen op 8-track tape in Bird's huis-studio
in Western Illinois met een kleine groep muzikanten bestaande uit drummer Martin
Dosh, gitarist en toetsenist Jeremy Ylvisaker en Mike Lewis op tenor-saxofoon en
basgitaar. Het feit dat Break It Yourself traditioneel is opgenomen betekent niet dat
de plaat ook als zodaning klinkt. Wel in zijn warme en eclectische geluid, maar zeker
niet in stijl. De nummers op het album gaan alle kanten op. Van jazz naar country, via
klassiek en folk naar popmuziek. Het compleet uit loops opgebouwde Hole in the
Ocean Floor komt voort uit de solosohows die Bird de afgelopen jaren deed, met Danse
Carribe heeft hij een meer wereldse weg ingeslagen, Give It Away is feitelijk een basis
popsong en met Orpheo Looks Back laat Andrew Bird keltische en noord-afrikaanse
muziek hand in hand gaan. Speciale vermelding verdient het nummer Lusitania, een
country-esk duet tussen Bird en Annie Clark (beter bekend als St. Vincent).

Check Andrew's official Web site about once a week: he posts "bonus tracks" that can only be downloaded from his site (for free!). There's one up now for "Break It Yourself." If you want to burn the album to CD, wait till all the bonus tracks are out (usually about four).
